Indy Connect’s new online survey asks Hamilton County residents their opinions about transit for their county. The input will guide community conversations this fall.
The survey is part of the transit planning process for Indy Connect – the partnership of the Central Indiana Regional Transportation Authority, Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and IndyGo.
“We want to hear what residents think about transit, whether they are enthusiast about it or not,” said Anna Gremling, executive director of the MPO.
Under Indiana law, Hamilton County has the opportunity to put on either the 2018 or 2020 ballot a referendum regarding funding for a better transportation system within the county or in a specific township.
“We know it can be tough for people to come out to public meetings to share their opinions, so we’re using this online interactive tool to make it convenient for residents to provide input whenever they want,” said Gremling. “The best plans incorporate a lot of community input. We feel the survey will help us reach a wider variety of people in the community than those who are able to attend public meetings.”
Gaining resident input is so important that street teams will be at various locations in Hamilton County helping people take the survey this summer. Street team members will be wearing blue “Ask me about Transit” shirts and will be at shopping malls, libraries and festivals.
The survey questions explore what transit tradeoffs residents want, their preferences on ways to structure a system, how they might use transit, and whether they want transit in their community.
