Welcome to another edition of Noble Geeks Tech Tips brought to you by the Hamilton County Reporter.
This week we visit a customer’s location about an iMac that worked until they heard a big electrical pop. I investigate and the thing let it ‘RIP.’ Our new concern was what was the culprit, as they were using a surge protector.
Well, what appeared to be a surge protector is only a “RELOCATABLE POWER TAP.” No protection, just an extension cord with multiple outlets and an on/off switch.
This brings me to the tip: CHECK YOUR POWER STRIPS! Look at the bottom for the words “TRANSIENT VOLTAGE SURGE SUPPRESSOR.” If it does not say this, it’s as simple as one thing: you are not protected at all from power surges.
That cost the customer an iMac, which even used, still brings in a value of a little over $1,200. Check your power strips now!
(Note: It is normal for it to list both! It just needs to say TRANSIENT VOLTAGE SURGE SUPPRESSOR.)
