Sundog day afternoon

Reporter photo by Megan Poteet

The Reporter’s own Megan Poteet snapped some sundog shots for us on Thursday afternoon. Sundogs are the two false suns seen in these photos, one on each side, within the 22-degree halo around the sun. While we are confident Hoosier Weather Daddy Paul Poteet would have a lot to say about parhelion and the meteorological conditions that allow this kind of image – something about ice crystals in the winter air, distance from the horizon and then something worth laughing about – we are just glad she caught these relatively rare photos. Our publisher wanted to make a comment about Megan being in the neighborhood of Tatooine, but that would have involved a dual sunset and surely have annoyed legions of Star Wars nerds.
