State Senate candidate supports protection for first responders

During my time as a correctional officer, patrol officer, narcotics detective and homicide investigations supervisor, I learned firsthand the importance of our first responders. Our first responders are at the tip of the spear, protecting and keeping our communities safe every day.

It goes without saying that the physical and mental wellbeing of our heroes is incredibly important to me. Even in the best of times, our first responders deal with stressful, dangerous, and often life-threatening situations. During this epidemic, the stakes have never been higher for our frontline heroes.

We’ve all seen pictures and read stories of medical professionals using homemade protective equipment. From using cloth masks to washing gowns, this is not something our EMS should be worrying about while they step forward to serve. It is simply vital that they have the equipment they need to care for us. This is not only to ensure our families have access to care when they need it, but to keep our promise to those who serve us.

I’m grateful to Governor Holcomb who recently announced that the State has secured 2.6 million personal protective equipment (PPE) items made by Hoosier manufacturers or donated by Indiana businesses for our front-line medical workers. Thank you to our state and local governments, along with individuals, non-profits and companies for stepping up to the plate to produce and supply our Indiana first responders.

But we know the need is incredibly high. I also urge our representatives in Washington to keep first responders in mind as they work to fight this crisis and include PPE for all first responders in any subsequent legislation they pass.

As your State Senator, I’ll support our law enforcement officers, firefighters and EMS personnel by ensuring they have access to cutting-edge resources and training to keep them safe and effective. Now, and always. Thank you to those who serve.
