Indiana Sen. J.D. Ford (D-Indianapolis) recently graduated from the Carmel Police Department’s Citizen Police Academy, a free program that offers residents an in-depth look at the operations and responsibilities of the police force.

The 11-week academy, held Thursday evenings from Aug. 8 through late October, allowed participants to engage in hands-on activities and receive instruction from Carmel Police Department officers.

Since its inception in 2001, the Citizen Police Academy has been a cornerstone of the department’s efforts to enhance communication and trust between law enforcement and the community. Unlike traditional police training programs, the academy focuses on educating participants about the police department’s diverse roles and functions, fostering informed citizens equipped with accurate knowledge about public safety.

“Participating in the Citizen Police Academy was an incredibly insightful experience,” Ford said. “I gained a deeper appreciation for the work our police officers do to protect and serve while also understanding the challenges they face. Programs like this are vital to building trust and collaboration between law enforcement and the community.”

The academy provides a behind-the-scenes view of policing, from tactical operations to community engagement initiatives. Ford’s participation reflects his dedication to understanding the needs of his constituents and working collaboratively to address community concerns.

“I encourage anyone interested in learning more about how public safety works in Carmel to consider joining future sessions,” Ford added. “It’s an excellent opportunity to bridge gaps, foster dialogue and strengthen our community.”

Ford plans to share his experiences with constituents and colleagues, highlighting the importance of fostering transparency and mutual understanding between police and the public.

The Citizen Police Academy is held biannually and welcomes residents interested in a deeper understanding of public safety. Information about the next session will be available in early 2025 on the Carmel Police Department’s website.
