Soil & Water awards several for their outstanding service

The Hamilton County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) held its annual meeting on Feb. 28 in Noblesville.

Highlights from the District’s 2022 work were shared by Conservation Administrator David Bradway.

SWCD recognized Lisa Meek, Dorrie Keyes, Shelly Brown, Phil Flannagan, Kim Gauen, and Laura McCloughan as Outstanding Volunteers for their dedicated service to the Hamilton County Invasives Partnership (HIP). Travis Cole, a GIS Developer/Analyst in the county’s Information Systems Services (ISS) Department was recognized as an Outstanding Partner for his work on the development of the HIP invasive species mapping system.

A special recognition was also given to SWCD Urban Conservationist Claire Lane for 10 years of service to SWCD. Leslie Taljaard, Director of Hamilton County’s Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Center and Solid Waste Management District, presented on the current state of recycling in Indiana and the waste management services offered by Hamilton County.

Jared Kakasuleff, longtime SWCD Board of Supervisors member and operator of Kakasuleff Farms, was re-elected to the SWCD Board of Supervisors and sworn in by County Council member Ken Alexander.

SWCD’s purpose is to provide information about soil, water, and related natural resource conservation; identify and prioritize local soil and water resource concerns; and connect land users to sources of education, technical, and financial assistance in order to implement conservation practices and technologies.
