Softball roundup: Westfield wins all-county game

Westfield won an all-county and Hoosier Crossroads Conference game 7-2 Tuesday at Fishers.

The Shamrocks scored their first run in the first inning when Chloe Tanner singled in Makayla Watson. Westfield steadily added to its lead for the remainder of the game.

Reese Mahannah hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to give the ‘Rocks a 2-0 lead. Sofia Easterhaus led off the fifth inning with a double, then scored on Ava Kainrath’s RBI fielder’s choice.

Westfield put up four runs in the sixth inning. Avery Banas batted in Mahannah with a left field hit, then Kainrath doubled in Annika Lawrence, Easterhaus and Watson with a left field double.

The Tigers scored both of their runs in the bottom of the sixth. Hailey Kinder got home on a wild pitch, then Anna McGrath singled in Kate Murray, who earlier got on base with a double.

Watson was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate for the Shamrocks. Tanner pitched a complete game, striking out three. Azstryd Alexander had two hits for Fishers. Murray also pitched a complete game with four strikeouts.

Westfield is 2-1 in HCC play and 3-0 overall, and hosts Harrison tonight. The Tigers are 1-2 in the conference and 9-4 overall, and play Thursday at Yorktown.

Fishers beat Lawrence North 19-7 on the road in five innings Monday.

Both teams scored two runs in the first inning; Kendall Jordan smacked a two-run homer for the Tigers. Fishers added three runs in both the third and fourth innings, with Adrianne Cook blasting a three-run home run in the third inning.

The Wildcats put up five runs in the bottom of the fourth, staying within 8-7, but Fishers dominated after that, scoring 11 runs in the top of the fifth. Alexander provided the exclamation point with a two-run home run. Alexander was perfect on the night, going 3-for-3 (home run, triple and double) with four runs scored and three RBIs.

Murray and McGrath also had three hits, with Murray batting in three runs. Clayton scored three runs. Murray and Rylee Bast both hit a double. Frankie Jackson went 3.2 innings for the win, striking out four.

Guerin Catholic beat Heritage Christian 17-1 in a five-inning Tuesday away game.

The Golden Eagles scored in each inning, finishing with five runs in the fifth. Guerin Catholic collected 17 hits as a team, with Kate Brady, Madi Cain and Jillian Davis all getting three hits. Lucy Kemp hit two doubles and totaled five RBIs, with Brady and Davis both scoring three runs each.

Ava Augustinovicz and Anna Mauch both hit one double. Augustinovicz got the pitching win, with seven strikeouts over three no-hit innings.

The Golden Eagles are 4-3 and host Bishop Chatard this afternoon in a Circle City Conference game.

Carmel cruised past North Central 13-3 in six innings Tuesday at Cherry Tree Softball Complex.

The Greyhounds scored in each inning, including a five-run second inning; Megan Pike led off that inning with a center field home run. Mia Fleming and Avery Klein later hit back-to-back RBI doubles.

Pike struck again in the sixth inning, blasting another homer over the center field fence to end the game. The freshman was 2-for-2 at the plate. Fleming, Klein and Lolah Pence all had three hits (two doubles for Fleming and Klein), with Taylor Vietch scoring three runs. Fleming totaled three RBIs and Carly Wright hit a double.

Emily Smith went 4.1 innings for the pitching win, striking out four.

Carmel is 2-10 and plays this evening at Pendleton Heights.

Hamilton Southeastern picked up a 2-0 HCC victory over Avon Tuesday at home.

Addison Richmond scored the Royals’ first run in the third inning, scoring on Makenna Burlingame’s sacrifice fly. Richmond got the RBI in the fourth inning, sending Maggie Jenkins home with a left field line drive.

Both teams had four hits in the game; Kenzie Lee, Sophia Feher and Chloe Smith also had hits. Grace Swedarsky pitched a complete game, striking out nine.

Southeastern is 1-1 in the conference and 7-4 overall. The Royals host Lawrence North on Thursday.

Noblesville won a Monday game at Harrison 5-0.

Reese Newsom hit a two-run home run in the first inning, also scoring Brookelyn Grayson. Haley Schatko sent a solo homer over the fence in the fourth inning. The Millers scored two in the seventh inning: Grayson singled in Nevaeh Nash and Izzy Zapp scored on Newsom’s sacrifice fly.

Grayson was 2-for-4 at the plate. Addison Retzinger threw eight strikeouts in a complete-game win.

Hamilton Heights split its first two games this week.

The Huskies fell at Bishop Chatard 9-3 on Monday. Heights scored a first-inning run when Heather Crays stole home plate, but the Trojans took control by putting up five runs in the second inning, including a grand slam.

McKenzie Jackson batted in Crays for a fifth-inning run, then Kamryn Rhoton scored on an error. Rhoton hit a double to get on base.

The Huskies rebounded Tuesday with a 13-3, six-inning victory at Tipton in a Hoosier Conference game. Heights started strong with five runs in the first inning, including a two-run double by Crays.

Jackson tripled in Rhoton for a fourth-inning run. Hailey Hall led off the fifth inning with a triple and later scored on Crays’ RBI groundout. Hall smacked another triple in the sixth inning, with Taya Trosper batting her in for what proved to be the game-clinching run.

Hall was 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring four runs. Crays finished with three RBIs and Rhoton scored three runs. Crays pitched a complete game, striking out seven.

Heights is 6-4 and hosts Tipton tonight to complete the conference series.
