Westfield’s Ashley Swartout wasted no time getting an extra-inning victory for the Shamrocks over Lebanon Friday.
In the first pitch of the bottom of the eighth inning, Swartout sent a home run over the center field fence. That gave Westfield the 5-4 victory over the Class 3A No. 5 Tigers.
Earlier in the game, Swartout had helped the ‘Rocks recover from a 4-0 deficit to tie the game in the third inning. First things first: Regan Nickel got Westfield on the board by batting in Madeline Hunter. Earlier, Reghan Oland had drawn a walk, and Nickel’s hit moved her to third.
That brought up Swartout. During her at bat, Ohland and Nickel both scored on a wild pitch. That made the score 4-3, and Swartout homered into right field to get the game back to 4-all.
Alexis McClure pitched all eight innings for Westfield to get the win.
The Shamrocks are 2-6 and will play two games at Kokomo today. Westfield takes on the host Wildkats at 10 a.m., then plays Huntington North at 12:30 p.m.
