Softball roundup: Sheridan picks up two victories

The Sheridan softball team won a back-and-forth game at Tri-Central 8-6 on Tuesday.
The Blackhawks began with three runs in the second inning. Cassie Vargas hit a double in the first at-bat, then Katy Crail singled her home. Crail scored when Nixon Williams reached on error, then Williams scored herself on an error.
In the top of the fourth inning, Addyson Ream batted in Crail to put Sheridan up 4-0. The Trojans poured in four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, then took a 5-4 lead in the fifth, but three runs in the sixth gave the Blackhawks the lead back for good.
Crail scored two more runs for a total of four in the game. This included a sixth-inning run where Crail got on base with a double, then was scored by Emma Went’s triple. Vargas also hit a triple. Crail went 3-for-4 at the plate.
Addyson Ream got the pitching win.
Sheridan won an all-county softball game with Guerin Catholic on Monday 10-2 at the Blackhawks’ field.
The Golden Eagles scored in the top of the first inning, with Hanna Bills hitting a right field double to score Madelyn Buckner. The Blackhawks tied the game in their first at-bat: Lauren Railer smacked a home run into center field. Audrey Reed later scored on a wild pitch to give Sheridan a 2-1 lead.
The ‘Hawks cemented their lead with three runs in the second inning. Railer singled in Crail, Allie Delph scored on a wild pitch, then Railer got home on another wild pitch.
Vargas scored on a wild pitch in the third inning. In the fourth, the Golden Eagles cut the lead to 6-2 when Bills got home on Victoria Flores’ RBI groundout. But in the bottom of the inning, Reed sent a two-run home run into left field, also scoring Railer. Crail hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning, also getting Williams home.
Railer finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate, with Reed and Crail both getting two hits. Ream pitched five innings for the win.
Buckner, Bills, Jackie Sapienza and Sarah Dilley all got two hits for Guerin Catholic.
Sheridan is 5-5 and travels to Clinton Prairie today for a 5 p.m. game. The Golden Eagles are 3-6 and head to Covenant Christian today for a 5:15 p.m. game.

‘Rocks score HCC win over Avon

Westfield scored a big Hoosier Crossroads Conference victory on Tuesday, beating Avon 10-5.
The Shamrocks started the game with a three-run home run from Ashley Swartout; Reghan Oland and Regan Nickel both scored as well. Kelsey Powers added a solo homer in the second inning, then Swartout cracked another home run in the third, getting herself and Nickel home.
Westfield got its fourth homer of the day in the fourth inning, when Sara Harmeyer sent a ball over the left field fence. Emily Revercomb also scored. Revercomb would drive in two runs in the sixth inning with her single, scoring Nickel and Swartout.
Swartout went 3-for-3 at the plate, scoring three runs and totaling five RBIs. Nickel scored three runs. Avery Wagner pitched a complete game for the victory.
On Monday, Westfield lost at Lawrence North 6-3. The ‘Rocks scored twice in the top of the first inning, with Ashley Swartout batting in Reghan Oland, then scoring herself on an error.
The Wildcats hit a home run in the bottom of the first inning, then got a three-run homer in the third to take a 4-2 lead. Brooklyn Carey hit an inside-the-park home run in the fourth inning to cut the lead to 4-3, but the Shamrocks would get no closer.
Westfield is 1-3 in the conference and 6-9 overall. The ‘Rocks host Zionsville on Thursday to continue HCC competition.

Tigers come back, overwhelm Greenfield

Fishers came back from a 6-1 deficit to overwhelm Greenfield-Central 15-6 in a Tuesday away game.
The Tigers scored five runs each in the fourth and fifth innings to take the lead. In the fourth, Olivia Latimer’s single scored Abbey Schmidt and started the rally. Brooke Benson singled in Latimer, Hannah Mays hit a double to get Courtney James and Benson home, then Caroline Bernhardt’s center field hit scored Maddie Wellington, who was running for Mays.
In the fifth inning, Latimer singled in Sydney Milburn, then was scored by a hit from James. Diane Abbott got on base with a hit, then Benson hit a home run to score everyone and give Fishers an 11-6 lead.
Benson was 4-for-4 at the plate, driving in five runs and scoring three. James scored four runs, while Milburn was 4-for-4 and Latimer was 3-for-4. Mays pitched a complete game for the win.
The Tigers are 10-6 and host Bishop Chatard at 6 p.m. today.

‘Hounds breeze to MIC victory

Carmel breezed to a 10-1 Metropolitan Conference win at Lawrence Central on Tuesday.
The Greyhounds got on the board right away, with Sarah Goddard’s RBI groundout getting Stormy Kotzelnick home. Carmel then added four runs in the third innings: Maddie Searles’ single scored Sydney Fox, Brooke Bair hit a sacrifice fly to send Kotzelnick home, and Sophia Derziotis’ single scored Searles and Goddard.
In the fourth inning, Megan Nichols doubled in Fox, and Kotzelnick hit a sacrifice fly to score Nichols. Fox batted in Ariana Zdobylak in the fifth inning, Goddard scored in the sixth after Derziotis reached on error and Lauren Reiter got Carmel’s 10th run in the seventh.
Derziotis finished the game with three RBIs, while Fox was 3-for-4. Sommer Edwards got the win, giving up just two hits.
Carmel is 3-1 in the MIC and 6-10 overall. The ‘Hounds host Plainfield on Friday.

Huskies fall to Lewis Cass

Hamilton Heights dropped a 10-0 game at Lewis Cass on Tuesday.
Jessica Kaurich and Adyson Baber both had one hit for the Huskies.

University falls to Bethesda Christian

University fell to Bethesda Christian 4-2 on Monday.
Junior Lydia Copeland scored in the first inning, then junior Lillian Klemsz batted in freshman Kendra Stevens in the sixth inning.
The Trailblazers played good defense throughout the game and were led by freshman Kendra Stevens on the mound and sophomore Abby Martin behind the plate. The Blazers just couldn’t get their bats going and the Bethesda Christian Patriots earned runs in the second and fourth, and two runs in the fifth inning.
