Softball roundup: Shamrocks split games with Southmont

Westfield split a doubleheader with Southmont Friday at the Shamrocks’ field.
In the first game, Westfield won 3-1. The Shamrocks took the lead right away, scoring a run in the first inning when Savannah Arvin hit a sacrifice fly to send Reghan Oland home.
The ‘Rocks added two runs in the fifth inning: Regan Nickel’s double scored Caroline Maymon, then an RBI groundout by Ashley Swartout sent Oland home for her second run of the game.
Oland and Nickel both finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate. Avery Wagner pitched a complete game for the win, allowing just four hits.
In the second game, the Mounties scored four runs in the first inning, and eventually beat Westfield 7-5.
The Shamrocks scored three runs in the third inning. Georgia Haffley got home on an error, then Swartout’s center field hit sent Brooklyn Carey and Nickel home.
In the fifth inning, Nickel batted in two runs, getting Madeline Hunter and Oland in to score. Nickel finished the game 2-for-4.
Westfield is 7-15 and hosts Western on Monday.

Huskies cruise past West Lafayette

Hamilton Heights overwhelmed West Lafayette 24-0 in the Hoosier Conference crossover game that was played Friday at the Red Devils’ field.
The Huskies scored in each of the last four innings, starting with eight runs in the second. Taylor Ewing was 5-for-6 at the plate, with Bayleigh Runner getting four hits. Jessica Kaurich, Hayley Greene, Adyson Baber and Aliyah Dorsey all had three hits.
Kaurich totaled four RBIs, with Jesse Nomdo driving in three runs. Ewing scored four runs. Greene hit a home run. Runner, Kaurich, Greene and Dorsey all scored three runs. Dorsey hit a triple, while Kaurich had two doubles and Nomdo hit one double.
Adyson Baber pitched all five innings, striking out seven and allowing just one hit.
Heights plays at Sheridan on Monday.

Early lead sends ‘Hounds to win

Carmel jumped out to an early lead and that led the Greyhounds to a 10-6 win at Terre Haute North on Friday.
Carmel scored twice in the first inning, with Stormy Kotzelnick and Maddie Searles both getting home on respective RBI groundouts from Sarah Goddard and Darby Roberts. The ‘Hounds added three more runs in the second inning: Caroline Roop scored on an error, Searles batted in Ariana Zdobylak, then Kotzelnick scored on an error.
Carmel added three more runs in the fourth inning. Roop scored her second run of the game on a fielder’s choice from Zdobylak. Kotzelnick scored on a passed ball, then Searles scored after Sydney Fox reached on error.
The Greyhounds got two more runs in the sixth inning: Goddard batted in Kotzelnick, the Fox’s line drive sent Goddard home.
Kotzelnick finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate and scored four runs. Goddard totaled two RBIs, with Searles and Roop each scoring twice. Sommer Edwards pitched a complete game for the win.
Carmel is 11-11 and plays two games at New Palestine today. The ‘Hounds take on Class 4A No. 5 Crown Point at noon, then the host school, 3A No. 1 New Pal, at 2 p.m.

GC’s comeback falls short against WeBo

Guerin Catholic nearly made a comeback against Western Boone on Friday before falling 5-4 in a game at the Golden Eagles’ field.
The Stars led 4-0 midway through the sixth inning. Guerin got on the board in the bottom of that inning, when Madelyn Buckner stole home plate. WeBo added a run in the top of the seventh to make the score 5-1.
The Golden Eagles started their seventh-inning rally with a one-out single by Jackie Sapienza. Annabelle Bork came in to run for Sapienza, and ran to third after Caitlin Collins hit a double. Bork then scored on an RBI groundout from Lucy Schenk.
Ana Macha was next up to the plate, and her center field hit sent Collins home. Buckner smacked a double into center field, moving to Macha to third. Macha would steal home to make the score 5-4, but the Stars got the next out to end the game.
Alicia Flores and Victoria Flores both had two hits, with Alicia Flores also hitting a double in the first inning. Alicia pitched a complete game, striking out seven.
The Golden Eagles are 6-10 for the season and play at North Central on Monday.

Vargas’ big hit sends ‘Hawks to win

Sheridan came from behind to win at North Miami on Friday, needing eight innings to score a 5-4 victory.
North Miami led 3-0 before the Blackhawks came back to tie the game in the top of the sixth inning. Emma Went was the first to score, on a single by Audrey Reed. Lauren Railer was the next to get home on an RBI groundout by Katy Crail. Railer had gotten on base with a double. Reed scored the third run after Cassie Vargas reached on error.
The game remained tied at 3-3 throughout the regulation seventh inning. In the eighth, Vargas gave Sheridan the lead on a two-RBI left field hit. Went and Railer both scored. Bre Bouse then retired the side in the bottom of the eighth.
Bouse pitched all eight innings, striking out five.
Sheridan is 9-8 and hosts Hamilton Heights on Monday.
