The Westfield softball team was down and almost out during its game with Taylor on Thursday.
The Shamrocks trailed 10-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, but rallied big time, cutting the Titans’ lead to 10-6. Taylor eventually won the game 12-6.
Westfield scored two runs with two outs in the fourth. With runners on second and third base, Regan Nickel hit a ground ball and reached first on an error. That would allow Sami Stegner and Corinne Molter to score.
The ‘Rocks added four more runs in the fifth inning. Dory Thompson smacked a single to send Reghan Oland and Ashley Swartout home. Later, Molter hit a two-RBI single of her own, scoring Emily Revercomb and Thompson.
Oland went 2-for-3 for the game.
“I really appreciate their effort,” said Westfield coach Brian Revercomb. “I think all game long they worked hard. We just caught some breaks. They made some nice adjustments on what we worked on in practice this week and I thought we saw the results of that hard work this week.
The Shamrocks are 0-2 and will play at Carmel on Monday.
‘Hounds drop opener to Irish
Carmel dropped its season opener at Cathedral on Thursday, 6-4.
The Greyhounds trailed 2-0 after two innings, then scored four in the top of the third. A Stromy Kotzelnick single sent Megan Nichols home for the first run. An error got Ariana Zdobylak home, then Maddie Searles’ fielder’s choice to first scored Sydney Fox. Kotzelnick scored late in the inning when Sarah Goddard grounded into a fielder’s choice.
Goddard hit a fifth-inning double. Sommer Edwards and Searles both pitched three innings for Carmel, with Edwards striking out three.
The ‘Hounds will play at Hamilton Southeastern at 5:30 p.m. this afternoon in a game that was re-scheduled from Tuesday due to weather.
Royals start season by beating North Central
Hamilton Southeastern got a win for its season opener Wednesday, beating North Central 5-3.
The Royals never trailed, as they scored twice in the bottom of the first inning. Libby Ratliff’s double sent Lillian Leiner home, then Ratliff scored on a single from Kaelin Wincek.
Southeastern added one run each in the second, fourth and fifth innings, eventually going up 5-1. The Panthers scored twice in the top of the seventh, but the game ended when Jordan Rager and Dillow caught a North Central runner stealing.
Abby Taylor went 3-for-4 at the plate, including a double. Abbey Willmann also hit a double. Nicole Lang got the Royals’ first home run of the season in the fifth inning.
Jaylah Guilliam went six and two thirds innings for the win, tossing 12 strikeouts.
Huskies improve to 2-0
Hamilton Heights came from behind again to score its second straight win on Thursday, beating Frankton 8-5.
The Huskies were down 3-1 after four innings, but poured in five runs in the top of the fifth and never trailed again. Adyson Baber had a powerful night, going 3-for-4, including a home run, batting in three runs and scoring two.
Hayley Greene hit a triple and scored twice. Jessica Kaurich batted in two runs, while Taylor Ewing went 2-for-4 at the plate. Baber went four innings for the pitching win.
“We had another night tonight where we were down early but the girls kept their composure and chipped their way into the lead,” said Heights coach Landi Lockwood. “Baber had another good night tonight on the mound and hitting.”
Golden Eagles overwhelm Heritage
Guerin Catholic overwhelmed Heritage Christian 20-1 in its season opener Thursday.
The Golden Eagles scored 14 runs in the first inning. Madelyn Buckner, Alicia Flores and Lucy Schenk all had three hits, including a triple from Flores. Hannah Bills also hit a triple. Victoria Flores, Buckner and Alicia Flores each scored three runs, with Bills and Schenk batting in three runs.
Bills pitched two and a third innings for the win, with four strikeouts.
