Tigers win ‘home run derby’ with LC
The Fishers-Lawrence Central softball game was more like a home run derby: Both teams combined for seven homers during Wednesday’s game.
But the Tigers didn’t need a hit to win: Courtney James scored on a passed ball with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, and that got Fishers the victory by the score of 13-12.
The Bears led 4-0 after the top of the first inning, but Fishers answered with three in the bottom of the inning. James singled in the first two runs, scoring Kristi Gordon and Diane Abbott. Brooke Benson was next to get home, as she was singled home by Hannah Mays.
The Tigers scored three runs in the second inning to take a 6-4 lead. Jade Frye scored on an RBI groundout by Abbott, then Mays hit a two-RBI single to get Gordon and James home.
Lawrence Central poured in six runs in the top of the fourth to lead 10-6, but Fishers immediately got it back, scoring five runs in the bottom of the inning to lead 11-10. James hit a two-run homer, scoring Abbott, then Mays cracked a home run into center field. A little later, Sarah Bumps smacked a two-run homer, which also got Sydney Milburn in to score.
There was one more home run left to hit, and Benson did so in the fifth inning. Her center field homer gave Fishers a 12-10 lead. The Bears tied the game with a two-run single in the top of the sixth, and the score was tied until James got home in the seventh.
James and Mays both finished with four RBIs; Mays was 4-for-5 at the plate. James scored three runs in total. Alexis Hall pitched two innings for the win.
The Tigers are 3-3 and will play at Hamilton Heights today. First pitch is 5:30 p.m.
