Softball Roundup: Huskies, Rocks get easy wins; Hounds go back-to-back for first time this season

Hamilton Heights cruised to a 12-0 five-inning Hoosier Conference victory over Tipton Wednesday at the Huskies’ field.

The Huskies scored four runs in the first innings and six more in the second. Lily Cash cracked a two-run home run in the first inning, while Izzy Morrow doubled in two runs in the second inning.

Heights added two runs in the fourth inning, with Kenley Scott and Hailey Hall both batting in one run. Hall was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate. Hall and Heather Crays both drove in two runs and scored two more runs, with Izzy Morrow batting in two runs. Morrow and McKenzie Jackson both hit a double.

Cash pitched all five innings, striking out nine.

The Huskies are 3-1 in conference play and 7-4 overall. Heights plays Friday at Lawrence Central.

Westfield took care of Harrison 10-1 on Wednesday.

Sofia Easterhaus scored the Shamrocks’ first run in the first inning, going home on Ava Kainrath’s sacrifice fly. In the third inning, Sydney Jordan sent Cam Pulice home with a bunt RBI, then Avery Banas hit a center field home run, also scoring Jordan.

Chloe Tanner scored in the third inning after Pulice reached on an error, giving Westfield a 5-1 lead. Pulice doubled in Makayla Watson for a fifth-inning run. The Shamrocks then scored four runs in the sixth inning: Annika Lawrence scored on Banas’ RBI groundout, Easterhaus singled in Dylan Todd (who got on base with a double), and Watson cracked a homer to left field, also scoring Easterhaus.

Watson finished with two hits. Shea Vohs got the pitching win.

Westfield is 4-3 and will play in a tournament in Kokomo this weekend, starting play by taking on Illiana Christian at 7:30 p.m. Friday night.

Carmel won a road game at Pendleton Heights on Wednesday, beating the Arabians 8-7.

The Greyhounds got on the board first with five runs in the third inning. Emily Smith singled in Winni Owens for the first run. Carmel loaded the bases, then Taylor Veitch scored when Avery Klein drew a walk. Ellie Goddard’s center field hit brought in Jayden Kleiner and Emily Proctor, and Klein scored on Megan Pike’s center field hit.

The Arabians hit a lead-off home run in the bottom of the third, and the score stayed 5-1 until the sixth inning. Carmel got two runs in the top of the sixth when Kleiner sent a double into right field, sending home Keira Libel and Katherine Warren. Pendleton scored a run in the bottom of the sixth, and Carmel answered with a run in the top of the seventh: Owens batted in Goddard with a center field hit.

Pendleton made a furious comeback in the seventh inning, scoring five runs, but Carmel got the final out to clinch their first back-to-back wins of the season. Goddard, Pike, Owens and Smith all had two hits. Smith pitched a complete game, striking out seven.

The Greyhounds are 3-10 and host their annual Carmel Invitational this weekend. The ‘Hounds take on Lake Central at 4:30 p.m. Friday to begin play.

Guerin Catholic lost to Bishop Chatard 14-4 in six innings Wednesday in a home Circle City Conference game.

The Trojans scored 10 runs in the first three innings. The Golden Eagles got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the third: Lucy Kemp singled in Kate Brady, then Anna Mauch’s center field double sent Kemp home.

Chatard added a run in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth. Guerin Catholic tried to extend the game in the sixth inning, as Izzy Phillips batted in Ava Augustinovicz and Brady sent Jillian Davis home with a left field single. But a flyout ended the game.

Kemp was 2-for-2 at the plate. Augustinovicz pitched five innings, striking out six.

The Golden Eagles are 0-2 in conference play and 4-4 overall. Guerin Catholic plays Friday at Decatur Central.
