Softball roundup: Huskies race through tourney & semifinal, but fall to Cascade in championship game; Golden Eagles drop game against Zionsville

The Hamilton Heights softball team finished second at the Twin Lakes Invitational last Saturday.

The Huskies began the tournament with an 11-0, five-inning win over Kankakee Valley. Playing as the home team, the Huskies scored at least two runs in all four innings they batted in. That included a two-run home run by Hannah Dent in the second inning. Addie Doak led off the game with a double, then Lily Roush hit a first inning double as well; both eventually scored. Heather Crays smacked an RBI double in the third inning.

Dent totaled three RBIs for the game, with Roush and Kamryn Rhoton both scoring two runs. Roush had two hits and also pitched all five innings. She struck out 10 and allowed two hits.

Heights started action last Saturday with a 10-0 win over Faith Christian in five innings. Crays was 3-for-3 at the plate, with Lily Cash and Dent both getting two hits. Crays, Taya Trosper, Kassidy Schakel and Dent all hit one triple, with Dent also hitting a double.

Dent, Roush and Trosper all batted in two runs, with Cash scoring three runs. Cash pitched all five innings, striking out nine with only one hit.

The Huskies rolled past West Lafayette 15-3 to reach the semifinals. Dent had another huge game, hitting 4-for-5 while driving in three runs, including a double. Roush hit two doubles. Cash scored four runs, one of those a home run she hit during the first inning. Schakel also drove in three runs. Roush pitched four innings for the win.

Semifinal win

Heights won its semifinal game over Rossville 3-2 to advance to the championship game. The Huskies scored two runs in the fourth inning, both times with the bases loaded. Roush got home on Trosper’s RBI fielder’s choice for the first run, then Hailey Hall drew a walk to score Rhoton.

Dent scored on an error in the fifth inning and Heights led 3-0. The Hornets scored two runs in the top of the seventh with two outs, but Crays threw a strikeout to finish the game.

The Huskies fell in the championship game to Cascade, 11-0 in five innings. Cash had two hits for Heights, with Dent, Rhoton and Trosper all getting one hit.

The Huskies are 15-6 and play at Guerin Catholic Tuesday and at Westfield Wednesday.

Guerin Catholic dropped a 17-3, five-inning game to Zionsville last Saturday.

Madi Cain scored the Golden Eagles’ first run by stealing home plate in the first inning. Anna Mauch hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning, also scoring Cain.

Kate Brady, Cain and Brooklyn Fritsche all had two hits, including a double for Fritsche.

Guerin Catholic is 1-11 and hosts Hamilton Heights Tuesday.
