Softball roundup: Heights opens with win, HSE takes down North Central, Guerin Catholic & Sheridan fall

The Hamilton Heights softball team won its season opener on Wednesday, beating Frankton in a road game 8-4.

The game was scoreless for the first three innings before the Huskies had a five-run outburst in the fourth inning. Kassidy Schakel batted in the first run, scoring Lily Roush who led off the inning with a single. Heights loaded the bases, then Hannah Dent scored after Hailey Hall was hit by a pitch.

Morgan Ottinger came up next and her fielder’s choice scored two runs with no Huskies called out. Isabelle Morrow and Schakel both got home. Addie Doak then scored Hall with an RBI groundout.

The Eagles scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Roush got the run back in the top of the fifth by stealing home plate; she led off with a double. Frankton cut the Heights lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the fifth.

The Huskies completed their scoring in the top of the seventh when a Schakel double brought in Dent and Mariyah Sexton. Schakel finished her day at the plate 3-for-4, with Roush going 2-for-3. Roush was also the winning pitcher, tossing 13 strikeouts over six innings against two hits.

Heights plays Friday at Lapel.

Hamilton Southeastern rolled past North Central 11-1 in a five-inning home game on Wednesday.

The Royals scored four runs in the second inning, including a two-run single from Jenna Chase. Alex Kiemeyer and Megan Wincek both smacked RBI doubles in the third inning, during which time Southeastern scored three runs.

Kiemeyer blasted a two-run home run in the fifth inning, and Chase hit another two-RBI single to score Lani Wyrick and Makenna Selm and finished the game.

Chase was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, with Kiemeyer driving in three runs. Chase and Keira Lodes also hit one double. Grace Swedarsky pitched three innings for the win, striking out seven.

The Royals are 2-0 and host Greenfield-Central on Tuesday.

Guerin Catholic dropped its season opener to Lebanon at home Wednesday, 18-8.

The Tigers scored four runs in the top of the first inning. The Golden Eagles got a run back in the bottom of the inning when an RBI fielder’s choice from Lillian Everts scored Anna Mauch.

Guerin Catholic surged ahead in the third inning, putting up six runs to take a 7-5 lead. Lucy Kemp doubled to get on base, Kate Brady reached on a fielder’s choice, then a single from Natalie Eiler scored Kemp and Brady. Rilee Kluesner then smacked a two-RBI hit to score Brooklyn Fritsche and Eiler, while Harleigh Abbott and Lauren Brady got home after Madi Cain reached on error.

Lebanon jumped ahead 8-7 in the top of the fourth inning, then put up five runs each in the sixth and seventh innings. Fritsche scored a run in the bottom of the seventh after Kluesner reached on error. Kemp totaled two doubles.

The Golden Eagles host Lapel this afternoon.

Sheridan fell at North Montgomery 10-0 in five innings on Wednesday to open its season.

The Chargers scored two runs in the fourth inning, then put up eight runs in the fifth inning to finish the game. Ali Pickard and Maelei Casler both had one hit for the Blackhawks.

Sheridan hosts Western Boone this afternoon.
