Hamilton Heights held off a late Westfield comeback to win on Wednesday, 6-5 at the Shamrocks’ field.
The Huskies got on the board right away, with four runs in the first inning. In Heights’ first at-bat, Taylor Ewing sent a home run over the left field fence. Later, Meredith Diller drew a bases-loaded walk to send Bayleigh Runner home, then Kelsie Albright smashed a two-RBI double to left field, scoring Adyson Baber and Aliyah Dorsey.
The score would stay at 4-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning, when the ‘Rocks tied it up. Ashley Swartout sent a triple into right field to score Regan Nickel. Savannah Arvin then scored on an error.
Rebekah Davidson got a base hit, then Madeline Hunter came in to courtesy run for her. Hunter would eventually score on a center field hit by Sara Harmeyer. Then, Hunter was sent to courtesy run for Harmeyer, and would score again, on a single by Alexis McClure.
With the score tied at 4-4, the Huskies got the lead back in the seventh inning. Ewing scored her second run of the game on Jessica Kaurich’s RBI groundout, then Baber hit a sacrifice fly to get Runner home. Westfield would score one more run, with Nickel getting home after Swartout reached on error, but Heights got the third out to secure the win.
Ewing and Baber both finished with two hits. Baber pitched a complete game for the win.
“We played a pretty good game tonight coming off of last night’s loss,” said Heights coach Landi Lockwood. “We did a much better job at the plate and minus a couple of errors, played pretty solid on defense.”
Nickel was 3-for-4 at the plate, while Caroline Maymon went 2-for-3.
Heights will play at West Lafayette on Friday for the Hoosier Conference playoff game crossover game. Westfield will play a doubleheader against Southmont Friday.
