Softball: Fast-scoring ‘Hounds get two big victories

The Carmel softball team has been scoring runs at an incredible pace this season, and it kept going early this week with two big victories.
On Monday, the Greyhounds won an all-county battle with Westfield 19-15. Both teams scored five runs in the first two innings. Carmel got on the board with a first-inning double by Megan Nichols, then Lily Sullivan and Kylie Cunningham each hit a home run in the second inning. Meanwhile, Avery Parker’s double gave the Shamrocks their first run, also in the first inning, and Grace Fanelli smacked a two-run homer into right field in the second inning.
Carmel then poured in five runs in the top of the third, with Audrey Hussain (one RBI) and Sophie Esposito (two RBIs) knocking in back-to-back doubles and Ella Ohrvall blasting a two-RBI triple. Westfield got a run back in the bottom of the third, but the Greyhounds rolled in the fourth with seven more runs. Megan Nichols, Esposito and Cunningham all hit home runs.
Carmel was thus leading 17-6 going into the bottom of the fourth, where Parker homered for the Shamrocks. Westfield then added another five runs in the fifth inning; Zoe Watson, Fanelli and Natalie Deck all hit RBI doubles.
The Greyhounds hit a home run in both the sixth (Sullivan) and seventh (Cunningham) innings. The ‘Rocks made a run in the bottom of the seventh, which included a two-RBI hit from Watson to get Westfield within 19-15, but Carmel got the third out on a pop-up to clinch the win.
Cunningham finished with three home runs on a 4-for-4 night, driving in four runs. Sullivan had two homers. Esposito had four RBIs and Sullivan also went 4-for-4 at the plate.
Deck batted in four runs for the Shamrocks, with Maggie Roh and Brooklyn Carey both getting three hits.
On Tuesday, the Greyhounds overwhelmed Cathedral 16-3 in five innings. Carmel scored 14 runs in the first inning.
Ella Ohrvall, Cunningham and Esposito all had three hits; with Cunningham, Esposito and Caroline Roop all smacking a home run. Nichols had two doubles. Paxton Law got the pitching win.
