Soccer: Westfield boys win on Teacher Appreciation Night

The Westfield boys soccer team celebrated its Teacher Appreciation Night with a 4-1 victory over Columbus North on Thursday.
The Shamrocks got off to a fast start, with three goals in the first half. Junior David Green scored the first two goals, with junior Ellis Douthit and sophomore Declan Wheeler respectively assists.
Senior captain Miguel Ayala got the third goal off an assist by junior Ben Wallace. In the second half, Wallace converted a penalty kick.
Westfield is 9-5-1 and will play Saturday morning at Plainfield.

Carmel cruised past Cathedral 5-0 Thursday at Murray Stadium.
Five different seniors scored goals for the Class 3A No. 19 Greyhounds: Drew Finkam, Noah Green, Sam Thiel, Ted Piha and Matt Andrews. Finkam made two assists, with seniors Jackson Hoover and Monish Pahndy each getting one.
“I’m proud of the effort the guys gave tonight,” said Carmel coach Shane Schmidt. “On an evening where it’s easy to let emotion take over, I felt we stayed focused and played well.”
The ‘Hounds are 9-3-2 and play tonight at 2A No. 3 Guerin Catholic.

University, the No. 2 team in 1A, cruised past Western Boone 11-0 in a Thursday home game.
Jacob Masoncup and Remy Lance both scored two goals for the Trailblazers. Six more University players got one goal: Quentin Berry, Evan Coveney, Rhett Offenbacher, Adam Behringer, Will Jacob and Ben Ewer. WeBo also had an own goal.
The victory makes the ‘Blazers 9-1-4 for the season. They host Tri-West next season to finish the regular season.

Noblesville beat Lawrence Central 2-0 on Thursday.
The 3A No. 11 Millers are 9-2-2 and host 3A No. 10 Hamilton Southeastern on Tuesday.

Sheridan lost to Eastern 2-0 on Thursday.
The Blackhawks are 3-7-2 and play Saturday at Western Boone.

GIRLS GAMES
The Hamilton Heights girls soccer team opened play in the Hoosier Conference tournament on Thursday, with a 3-0 quarter-final victory over Tipton.
The 2A No. 17 Huskies scored early, with Emma Hall playing a ball to Caitlin Hartwick, who scored the goal. Hall picked up her second assist 15 minutes later when she sent the ball to Emily Stirn, who kicked it into the net from 25 yards out.
In the second half, Jenna Peterson assisted Maria Mitchell for the Huskies’ third goal; Peterson sent it to the center, where Mitchell put it past the keeper. Meanwhile, Heights coach Travis Kauffman said that his goalkeeper, Tessa Harr, “played a fantastic game in goal,” as she turned away multiple scoring opportunities.
The Huskies are 6-1-4 and play their semi-final game Saturday against 2A No. 15 Western.

Carmel, ranked No. 2 in 3A, won a hard-fought game at 2A No. 1 Brebeuf Jesuit 3-0 on Thursday.
Morgan Parker assisted on the first two of the Greyhounds’ goals, which were scored by Susie Soderstrom early in the first half and Kelsie James early in the second half. Mia Glass got Carmel’s third goal late in the second half. Erin Baker made eight saves as the Greyhounds’ goalkeeper.
Carmel is 10-0-3 and plays Saturday afternoon at 3A No. 12 Zionsville.

University, ranked No. 5 in 1A, took care of Western Boone 9-0 on Thursday.
Whitney Freeman scored six goals for the Trailblazers, bringing her season total to 33. University is 11-2-2 and plays Tuesday at Triton Central.

Sheridan fell to Rossville 4-1 on Thursday.
The Blackhawks scored the game’s first goal, when Jensyn Walker put the ball in the net off an assist by Makaela Mosolf. But the Hornets scored just before halftime, then took control in the second half.
Sheridan next plays Wednesday at Tipton.
