Guerin Catholic coach Jonathan McClure that his team was able to rebound, since GC had suffered a tough loss in its first game of the season on Wednesday. The Golden Eagles led 3A No. 15 Zionsville 1-0 with four minutes to go, but the Eagles scored twice to win 2-1, getting the game-winner with 18 seconds left.
“Games like that are tough,” said McClure. “And especially for our young group this year, it was a good learning lesson. So I was really proud of the perseverance, the resilience and the way they were able to work together and weather what was a really hard storm in that second half and not allowing Carmel to get in the net.”
Bailey Cappella had eight saves for Guerin. Erin Baker had three saves for the Greyhounds, who were playing their first game of the season.
“I think we played well,” said Carmel coach Frank Dixon. “The first half, pretty slow. We were in it, but we were slow doing what we were doing. Second half, we picked up the intensity and pushed on them and just couldn’t find a way to get the ball in the back of the net.”
The Noblesville girls team, ranked No. 3 in 3A, cruised past 2A No. 5 West Lafayette 7-2 in a Saturday afternoon game.
