The high school soccer season got under way in Hamilton County on Saturday with two wins and a tie.
Both the wins came from Fishers teams. The Tiger girls, ranked No. 19 in the Class 3A pre-season coaches poll, scored a dramatic win at McCutcheon by the score of 4-3. Taryan McFarland scored the game-winning goal with 12 seconds left, her second goal of the game. Castro and Turner both had one goal.
Back at Fishers, the Tiger boys won their opener 2-0 over new Hoosier Crossroads Conference opponent Franklin Central. Jacob Lawrence and Rodrigo Dominguez both scored one goal, with Yuto Nakamae making an assist. Goalkeeper Brendan Weiger earned the shutout.
Meanwhile, Carmel opened its season by hosting Zionsville at Murray Stadium. The 3A No. 10 Greyhounds played the 3A No. 1 Eagles to a 0-0 tie. Brody Sullivan got the shutout for Carmel.
“All in all, I’m happy with the effort,” said Carmel coach Shane Schmidt. “It’s really hard, especially when you come back and play against a quality side like Zionsville in your first game. Everybody goes off and plays with their respective club teams.
“You bring everybody back together and you have kind of a week of tryouts and then a week of everything that goes on, a little bit of training and try to get stuff organized. The one thing that everybody can put forth is the individual effort and I was really proud of all of our individual efforts in what happened today.”
