Junior Kian Sills scored a career-high 23 points and tied a single-game school record with 7 steals as Guerin Catholic snapped a three-game losing streak with an 86-62 victory over Muncie Central in boys basketball action Saturday night.
The Golden Eagles shot 50 percent (33-of-66) from the field for the contest and never trailed. A dunk by Drew Thieme highlighted a 14-2 run as the Golden Eagles took a 39-29 lead in the locker room at halftime. Muncie Central fought back though after halftime to outscore GC 24-19 in the third quarter.
However a 28-point fourth quarter sealed the victory for Coach Pete Smith’s Golden Eagles. “We played with more energy tonight than we had in our first four games,” said Smith. “I was pleased we only committed six turnovers the final three quarters; that sure helped. We defended well overall, despite giving up 62 points.” A pair of zone defensives administered by GC forced the Bearcats to shoot 29 3-point field goals, of which they made only four.
Sills was complemented nicely in the scoring column by Jack Hansen and Zach Munson, who scored 22 and 21 points, respectively. Hanson also added career-highs of 15 rebounds and nine assists in the contest. Luke Godfrey came off the bench and added seven assists as 24 of the 33 field goals the Golden Eagles made were assisted baskets. The team also made their first fourteen free throws before missing their final three in the fourth quarter.
It was the sixth meeting between the two schools, with Guerin Catholic winning for the fifth time. Now 2-3 on the season, the team will have another double-header weekend coming up. Next Friday, GC will Heritage Christian in a Circle City Conference match-up, followed by a match-up with Smith’s former assistant Scott Radeker and his undefeated Lafayette Jefferson Bronchos.
