May 3, 1937 – October 21, 2021
Shirley Ann Olson, 84, Carmel, passed away on Thursday, October 21, 2021. She was born on May 3, 1937 in Kokomo, Ind., to James and Mary Jo (Pickering) Montgomery.
Following her graduation from Kokomo High School in 1955, Shirley attended Hanover College where she received a B.S. in education. She continued onto Ball State University where she received her master’s degree in reading and education.
After leaving Ball State, Shirley and three college friends moved to California and accepted teaching jobs. That is where she met Larry her husband, who also was a teacher, and they were married December 24, 1960. After a few years, Shirley and Larry moved to Indiana where they started their family. For a time, Shirley worked at Peter Rabbit Day Care as she continued to enjoy working with children.
Some of Shirley’s interests were swimming, watching sports on TV, especially the Colts and Pacers. She enjoyed reading her Bible, walking, visiting Conner Prairie to listen to Symphony on the Prairie, spending time at the lake, cooking, and grilling out. Shirley received the award of the best tasting, most delicious pumpkin pie and pumpkin bread, given by her children. In her later years, Shirley liked to eat out, appreciating Hollyhock Hill and The Cheesecake Factory. One of her many favorite desserts was ice cream.
The greatest joy in life for Shirley was spending time with her family. She loved to laugh, was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Shirley will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her!
In their early years, Shirley and Larry were members of Hope Church where the children grew up.
Survivors include her children, Janelle Stroup, Jodelle Olson, and Kyle (Carisa) Olson; and grandchildren, Hannah Stroup, Tate Olson, and Anslee Olson.
Family and friends will gather at 10 a.m. on Friday, October 29, 2021 at Colonial Hills Baptist Church, of which Shirley was a member, and where the Funeral Service will begin at noon. A Committal Service will follow in Union Chapel Cemetery, Indianapolis.
In memory of Shirley, donations may be made to Colonial Hills Baptist Church, 8140 Union Chapel Road, Indianapolis, IN 46240. Envelopes will be available at the service.
