Sheridan Youth Program gets $20,000 grant

The Sheridan Youth Assistance Program (SYAP) is the recipient a $20,000 Crosser Family Foundation Grant, which will support SYAP’s Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP).

In Phase I of this 10-day summer program, 10 to 12 Sheridan High School students will have the opportunity to visit businesses to learn more about career opportunities in various sectors and engage in community service to serve Sheridan and/or Hamilton County non-profit businesses. Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive an hourly wage for their work and personal satisfaction for a job well done.

Companies already scheduled to participate in July 2020 include: Gaylor Electric, SMC Corporation, LIFT Academy, Gleaners Food Bank, Hamilton County Harvest Food Bank and Grace Care Center.

Students who successfully completed this program in July 2019 are now eligible for the Advanced/Phase II of SYEP. Students will tour a business on a monthly basis during the school year to learn more about the jobs available at each specific business, the training/education required for specific careers, the soft skills required for success in the job, and learn what employers are looking for in prospective candidates. A variety of business sectors and career pathways will be represented.

Students will then be able to apply for a 60-hour paid, trial internship to work within the chosen business. Students would receive an hourly wage from SYAP/SYEP during the trial internship.  At the end of the trial internship the participating business could choose to hire the student on a permanent basis.
