Sheridan’s first Town Square Music Fest will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday at Sheridan’s town square, located between 2nd and 3rd streets on the west side of Main Street. The event offers free music, food and fellowship in a family-friendly atmosphere.
The Reporter caught up with Pastor Stephen Yarbrough of Sheridan First Christian Church to talk about this community event.
“It’s being sponsored by First Christian Church,” Yarbrough said. “Some of us have been talking about wanting to have music for the community. The Thursday Night Special are a group of our own musicians who have been playing together. We have relationship with different groups. We got excited about the idea of hosting something free for the community with a little food as something for families to do on a Saturday night.”
Yarbrough wanted to give credit to the group of people who helped make this event possible.
“It’s not just me; there is a team of people who have gotten really excited about this project and come together around it.” Pastor Yarbrough calls them “The Dream Team.”
“There’s a group of folks we’ve been calling ‘The Dream Team’ who have been thinking about ways we can better get in touch with the community and do things for the community,” Yarbrough said. “It’s all folks from First Christian, although many of them have experience with other organizations. For example, Michelle [Junkins] is involved with the Main Street group in Sheridan.”
He noted, however, that this is not a Main Street project. Yarbrough wanted to point out that the people on this dream team come with experience from a variety of organizations, which has helped make this event a reality.
Yarbrough said there may be an opportunity for a free-will donation, but he does not want anyone to feel that they need to donate in order to come enjoy the music.
“The Hummingbirds are from the Williams family who sing classic country,” Yarbrough told The Reporter. “Blue Sunshine is classic country, classic rock and folk music. That’s me and my wife and we play exclusively secular music. The other two groups [The Barker Sisters and Thursday Night Specials] are gospel groups.”
Hotdogs, chips and drinks will be available to those who attend.
“We hope it’s a fun, family-friendly event. We encourage people to bring lawn chairs,” Yarbrough said.
