Roy Overdorf, a 47-year member of the Sheridan Rotary Club, was recently able to fulfill a life goal by becoming a major donor to the Rotary Foundation a year after his death. At a local club meeting on Nov. 20, club members, friends and family watched as Roy’s longtime Rotary friend, Jerry Erskine of the Lebanon Rotary Club, honored Roy by presenting Roy’s daughter and grandson, Kim and Jordan Kinkead, with an engraved Major Donor crystal desk ornament and a diamond lapel pin to commemorate Roy’s contributions during his life and posthumously. Sheridan Rotary and Rotary International thank Kim for completing her father’s Paul Harris Society wish.

The Rotary Foundation is the financial arm through which Rotary does good works around the world, including right here at home. The Rotary Foundation recently helped finance a new roof for Mama’s Cupboard in Sheridan through a matching grants program. The mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education and the alleviation of poverty. About 35,000 clubs worldwide carry out sustainable service projects that support the Rotary’s six causes. Donations like Roy’s have helped wipe out 99.9 percent of all polio cases worldwide, to train future peacemakers, support clean water projects and strengthen local economies.
Rotarians and others who contribute $1,000 or more to the Rotary Foundation are recognized as Paul Harris Fellows and those who contribute $10,000 or more are recognized as major donors. Paul Harris founded the first Rotary Club in Chicago in 1905.
Sheridan Rotary members are proud of the club’s 92-year history as a vibrant member of the Sheridan community.
