Sheridan High School (SHS) held its annual National Honor Society (NHS) induction ceremony on Tuesday, March 25.

This event recognized students who have demonstrated excellence in community service, leadership, and positive character. In order to be eligible for NHS membership, SHS students must have a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.5 or higher. Eligible students are then reviewed and selected to be eligible to be inducted.

The induction ceremony shines a light on students who are making positive impacts in the classroom and outside of it. The event brought together students, faculty, and families to honor the accomplishments of these new inductees. Each inductee was individually recognized and presented with a patch for their letter jacket that marks their membership. This patch symbolizes and recognizes their commitment and embodiment to the four pillars of the NHS. The pillars are scholarship, leadership, service, and character. These pillars guide members in their academic and their personal lives.

The first pillar is scholarship. Scholarship represents the commitment to academic excellence. NHS members must maintain a high GPA and demonstrate a strong work ethic in the classroom. Their dedication to their learning serves as an inspiration for their peers.

The second pillar is leadership. Leadership in the National Honor Society goes beyond just winning awards or holding a position. Members are expected to lead by example, demonstrate integrity, responsibility, and a willingness to inspire and uplift others. Whether in the classroom, on the field, or in the community NHS members are positive role models.

The third pillar is service. Inductees made a commitment to give back to their school and community through a dedication to volunteer work, fundraising efforts, and acts of kindness. Inductees and members of the NHS are dedicated to making a meaningful impact on the world.

The fourth and final pillar of the NHS is character. Character is the foundation of the members’ identities. Members of the NHS encompass the positive qualities of honesty, respect and perseverance. Members are expected to uphold these moral values and demonstrate them in all aspects of their lives.
