Main Street was all abuzz Tuesday afternoon as Blackhawks descended on Downtown Sheridan with brooms and unbridled enthusiasm in tow.
Members of Sheridan High’s upcoming 2025 football team took it upon themselves – with perhaps some encouragement from their coach – to help spruce up the town’s sidewalks, while putting out the word that they were seeking monetary donations to enhance one of Indiana’s most prominent small-school gridiron programs.

“It was a hit,” smiled first-year head coach Jake Chesney. “The next day was more of a bonding event as we spent an hour as a team at the museum.”
The Stephenson Family Heritage Center in the heart of Downtown is where the players – many for the first time – got to experience numerous displays of Sheridan history, including the famed Sheridan Football/Coach Larry “Bud” Wright display.
“Greek’s [Pizzeria] was nice enough to feed us afterwards,” Chesney noted.
The coach has challenged his players to raise $15,000 before Monday, June 9.
“Our goal is for each player to try and bring in $500 in donations,” Chesney pointed out. “The funds raised are going to necessary replacement of outdated stuff. Mostly new travel bags, practice jerseys and odd-end equipment items so every kid is fully equipped.”
The coach says the number of players showing interest in his fledging program has been encouraging.
“It was another great turnout,” he said of recent activities. “So far the kids are eager and ready to start playing football. A lot of them are buying in to what we’re trying to do, which is awesome.”
