Sheridan Fire Department establishes new Merit Commission with help of Local 4416

The Hamilton County Professional Fire Fighters Association I.A.F.F. Local 4416 has announced the formation of a new Merit Commission for the members of the Sheridan Fire Department.

The commission held its inaugural meeting at 6 p.m. last Wednesday, April 16 at the Sheridan Community Center, marking a significant step toward increased professionalism, transparency, and accountability in the department’s hiring, promotion, and disciplinary processes.

The establishment of the Merit Commission represents a collaborative effort among department leadership, elected officials, and the dedicated fire fighters of Sheridan. Its purpose is to uphold the principles of merit-based personnel decisions and ensure fair and equitable practices within the department.

“We commend the members of the Sheridan Fire Department for taking this important step in strengthening the future of the department and the community it serves,” Local 4416 District Vice President Craig M. Owens said. “The creation of this Merit Commission is a reflection of their commitment to service excellence and professional integrity.”

Sheridan Fire Chief Travis Stern expressed his appreciation for the efforts behind the commission’s formation.

“I want to thank the Town Council and Local 4416 for all their hard work and long hours making this Merit Commission possible,” Stern said. “I look forward to building a great working relationship with the new Commission as we continue to move the department forward.”

The commission’s first meeting included the swearing-in of appointed members, a review of operational guidelines, and the initiation of steps to draft merit rules and procedures that will govern the commission moving forward.

Local 4416 looks forward to supporting the work of the Merit Commission as it begins its mission to enhance the structure and effectiveness of the Sheridan Fire Department.
