This week, students at Sheridan Elementary School (SES) had the opportunity to take learning beyond the classroom and experience two amazing field trips that blended education, fun, and once-in-a-lifetime moments.

SES fourth graders revved up their curiosity with an incredible visit to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), made possible through a unique lottery system open to all Indiana schools. Sheridan was lucky enough to snag a spot, and the result was a completely free, four-hour immersive experience into the history and science of the Indy 500.
Students learned about the iconic Yard of Bricks, the meaning behind racing flags, and the advanced science behind IndyCars. They explored the critical roles of health and nutrition for drivers, medical safety protocols, timing and scoring systems, and the many careers that make the race possible.
One of the most exciting activities involved students taking on the role of team managers. Each group received a “sponsorship” budget and had to make decisions about car design, driver experience, and supply costs – turning math, strategy, and teamwork into an exciting real-world challenge.
For many students, this was their first time visiting the world-famous IMS, and their reactions said it all – they were fascinated, engaged, and inspired. It was a day full of learning and laughter, and one they won’t soon forget.

Not to be outdone, SES third graders also got their own moment in the spotlight during Baseball in Education Day at Victory Field, home of the Indianapolis Indians. Sheridan was one of dozens of schools in attendance, and the experience was truly a home run.
The weather couldn’t have been better, creating the perfect backdrop for a fun-filled day of baseball and learning. Nearly every student managed to snag an autograph from either Rowdy, the Indians’ beloved mascot, or an actual player – making memories (and keepsakes!) to last a lifetime.
Adding to the excitement, over 50 parents joined the trip, creating a strong sense of community and support. The energy was high, the smiles were wide, and the kids had an absolute blast.
These two fantastic field trips are shining examples of how SES is dedicated to providing enriching, real-world learning experiences. Whether learning about the roaring engines of the Indy 500 or cheering from the stands at a baseball game, students got a taste of history, science, sportsmanship, and fun – all in one unforgettable week.
