New to Sheridan Community Schools (SCS) is Sheridan Education Foundation, Inc. (SEFI) with a mission to provide grants to teachers to engage student learners in the classroom and beyond.
For decades, the Sheridan Community Schools Scholarship Foundation Fund has provided Sheridan High School graduates an opportunity to obtain scholarships for post-secondary opportunities. This scholarship fund has been generously funded by the Sheridan community. However, there has not been an opportunity for Sheridan educators to have access for financial assistance to introduce new and innovative programs within their classrooms and throughout the school.
With the encouragement of SCS Superintendent Dr. David Mundy, a group of current and former Sheridan educators, parents, students, and community members began researching how to create a foundation similar to other schools in the county. Their goal was to find a way to financially support teachers in a more organized, sustainable, and broader manner, and Sheridan Education Foundation Inc. was officially organized in August 2023.
The Foundation’s kick-off fundraising event was hosting an alumni dinner during the 100th Sheridan Homecoming Celebration, and it is currently planning a Jeeps and Wings event for Aug. 3, 2024.
Other means of financial support at this time include: SEFI is the recipient of a grant from the Hamilton County Board of Commissioners, several very generous donations from educators and community members, and donations from local businesses.
During this season of giving, SEFI is pleased to accept grant applications from SCS educators. In January, the applications will be reviewed and the first grants will be awarded by February 2024. Future grant cycles will be determined and opened as fundraising continues, donations to the foundation accepted, and the financial capacity of the Foundation accelerates.
Anyone with questions about SEFI should contact an officer of the SEFI Board of Directors: Sharon Brimberry, President; Kim Zachery, Vice President; Jenna Jessup, Treasurer; or Jane Newblom, Secretary.
