Sheridan won its Homecoming game on Friday, and also earned a chance to play for another championship.
The Blackhawks sailed past Taylor 66-13 at Bud Wright Stadium. With the victory, Class 1A No. 7 Sheridan is now 5-0 in the Hoosier Heartland Conference, with one game remaining. That game will be played Oct. 5 against Eastern.
But first, the ‘Hawks had to get past the Titans. They had little trouble doing so, leading 13-0 after the first quarter and 40-6 at halftime.
“I think we played pretty good,” said Wright. “I think overall we did a pretty good job.”
James Manis scored three touchdowns for Sheridan, all in the first half. Two of them were on 50-yard runs, and he also broke through on a 6-yard run with under a minute left in the first period. Manis would lead all runners with 157 yards on 13 carries.
Cameron Hovey added a pair of scores, running in from four yards in the second quarter, then cruising to the end zone from 38 yards in the third period. Drake Delph punched the ball in from the 1-yard line early in the second period. Late in the quarter, Delph connected with Jesse Kolb for a 57-yard pass play touchdown. Delph was 3-of-7 passing the ball, but totaled 105 yards with those throws.
Nick Burnell added an 18-yard TD in the third quarter, then Evan Bourdon and Jacob Vita both scored from two yards in the third as well.
As for the defense, the ‘Hawks did give up a pair of touchdowns during the middle quarters. But other than that, Wright said the Sheridan defense was sound. Over their last five games, the Blackhawks have only allowed 19 points.
Sheridan will take a break from the HHC next week to host Seeger. That will be followed by the big game against Eastern, who ran past Clinton Central 45-0 on Friday. The Comets are 3-0 in HHC play.
