This spring Sheridan Community Schools will begin its partnership with the Special Olympics through the Unified Champion Schools Program.
This year students in preschool through second grade will work to raise awareness of the various abilities of children with disabilities through peer leader, developmentally appropriate activities and a partnership with parents and community. The goal of the district is to continue to grow the programs and its Special Olympics participation gradually over the next couple of years eventually providing the opportunity to every building and grade level.
Director of Special Education Erin Rood noted, “As a district we have wonderful students and exceptional student mentors. This partnership will allow us to continue to grow these relationships through the participation in Special Olympics.” The district will be looking for community volunteers as well as those interested in making donations.
The date of the inaugural event will be May 19, 2017.
