The Sheridan boys basketball team traveled to Alexandria on Wednesday to compete in the Alex Tigers Classic.
The Blackhawks dropped their semi-final game to Greenfield-Central 60-53. Sheridan regrouped for the third-place game, which it won on a buzzer-beater over Southern Wells, 57-55.
Against the Cougars, the ‘Hawks led 16-11 after the first quarter, with Ethan Moistner hitting a pair of 3-pointers. Greenfield came back in the second period, and took a 27-21 advantage into halftime.
It was Sheridan’s turn to make the comeback in the third quarter, which it did by scoring 21 points to take a 42-41 lead. Mositner nailed three more triples and scored 11 points, while Keenan Warren added six in that period. But the Cougars took over in the fourth, scoring 19 points to get the win.
Moistner finished with five 3s and 17 points, coming close to a double-double with nine rebounds. Silas DeVaney had 14 points, five steals and four assists. Corbin Murray collected five rebounds and Kyle Eden had four assists and four steals.
In the third-place game, Sheridan got off to another good start, leading 13-8 after the first quarter. Southern Wells poured in 20 points in the second period, but the ‘Hawks maintained a 29-28 advantage at halftime; Moistner helped out with two 3s.
Southern Wells led 41-38 after three quarters, but DeVaney took over the game in the fourth. The junior scored 10 points and made a buzzer-beating layin to get Sheridan the victory.
DeVaney scored 21 points and had six steals and five rebounds. Moistner added 19 points, throwing three more 3-pointers, made five steals and pulled five rebounds. Cayden Hunter also collected five rebounds and Corbin Murray had five assists and four steals.
The Blackhawks are 2-1 and travel to Rossville on Saturday for their first Hoosier Heartland Conference game of the season.
