The Sheridan baseball team won a first-round game at Class 1A Sectional 54 at Frontier on Wednesday, overwhelming South Newton 20-3.
The Blackhawks scored four runs in the first inning, then extended their lead to 9-3 after six innings. Sheridan then poured in 11 runs in the seventh inning. Collin McNair and Cole Bales hit back-to-back doubles to start the inning, Gavin Reners hit a center field single to send both of them home, and the Blackhawks were on their way.
Reners went 3-for-4 at the plate, including a double, and batted in five runs. Cameron Hovey had a perfect 4-for-4 night, scoring three runs and driving in two. Hovey and Camden Spencer both hit one double as well. Cole Bales scored four runs and Corbin Murray scored three runs.
Reners got the pitching win, striking out five in two innings.
Sheridan is 10-18 and plays No. 8-ranked Rossville at 5:30 p.m. this afternoon in the sectional semi-finals. Tri-County and Clinton Central will play the second semi-final, starting around 7:30 p.m.
