NOBLESVILLE – The Westfield girls golf team won its second important tournament in less than a week Wednesday.
The No. 1-ranked Shamrocks scored a convincing victory at the Hamilton County meet, which took place at Harbour Trees. Westfield cruised to a team score of 302, comfortably ahead of runner-up Noblesville’s 315. Hamilton Southeastern was a strong third, carding 318.
“We obviously played fantastic,” said Westfield coach Josh Bryant. He gave credit to all the Shamrocks golfers, saying that “up and down the lineup, the girls really executed.”
“We practiced short game for a couple days in a row,” said Bryant. “Harbour Trees, the green complexes off a different challenge that you don’t see at other places. I couldn’t be happier with how we played.”
The Rocks claimed three of the top five individual positions as well. Addi Kooi took medalist honors with an even par 71. Kooi had also led Westfield to a win in the State Preview meet at Prairie View last Saturday, winning medalist honors there as well.
Kooi made an eagle on hole No. 4 and followed that up with three birdies.
“I definitely had a good putter and a good swing,” said Kooi. “I’ve just been really trying to focus and improve my mental game more than anything, so that’s really helped me.”
Kelsey Haverluck earned runner-up honors with her score of 72. She totaled five birdies, including four on the back nine.
“I played pretty well,” said Haverluck. “I had a hard time getting it started on the front nine. I doubled my first hole, but I ended up three over on the front and then I pulled it back together with a few birdies on the back and shot under on the back.”
Sophie Raines tied for fourth place by scoring a 76, making four birdies. Bryant called Raines “a huge bright spot so far.”
“He play has just been getting better and better all year and it’s even ratcheted up in the first week of August,” said Bryant.
Sadie Edwards also had one birdie for the Rocks. Meanwhile, Kooi and Haverluck said that team chemistry is also key for Westfield’s solid start.
“I think all the girls really get along, and that really helps for our scores,” said Haverluck.
“I think a lot of these longer rounds the past few tournaments, getting backed up and being able to talk to your teammates and have a good time, and not just focus on golf and being able to enjoy each other’s company is really important and just keeps us really happy,” said Kooi. “Our team dynamic, when someone makes a birdie and it just makes the other person want to do better.”
The No. 3-ranked Millers had three players finish in the top 10. Josie Kelley tied for fourth with 76, totaling three birdies. Olivia Fowler scored 77 to place sixth, also making three birdies. Karis Shields tied for ninth with 80, draining two birdies. Kate Murphy and Olivia Anderson both made two birdies.
Janelle Garcia led the way for the No. 9-ranked Royals. She scored 74 for third place, making three birdies along the way.
“I did well,” said Garcia. “I haven’t done well in a while. I’m happy with my score today.” Garcia also said her performance will “encourage me for the next few matches.”
Laci Hart tied for ninth place, scoring 80. Sophie Roberts, Karolina Franssen and Brooke Willard each made one birdie.
Eighth-ranked Carmel scored 336 to place fourth. Sophie Mock tied for seventh place with 79, draining two birdies along the way. Maddie Headlee, Allie Thompson and Mallorie Monico all had one birdie.
Guerin Catholic placed fifth with 360. Ali Scott tied for seventh place by scoring 79, putting in one birdie. Sydney Delagrange also made one birdie.
Fishers scored 380 for sixth place. Lola Kivett made two birdies, while Kendall Manion had one birdie.
University’s Grace Cates also had one birdie during her round.
