Shamrocks ready to bounce back in 2019

Westfield is looking forward to bouncing back from an injury-plauged 2018 season into a strong campaign in 2019.
The Shamrocks have a nice number of key returning players that will help the team navigate its way through a tough regular season, including each of the teams in the Hoosier Crossroads Conference.
“We had a lot of young talent last year that gained some great experience and look for them to make an impact this season,” said Westfield coach Brian Revercomb. “As always our schedule will be a very competitive one and is full of good teams, including our conference schedule, which will be an excellent challenge for us each game. I cannot say enough about the teams and coaching in our conference, in my opinion one of the toughest in the state each year.”
The ‘Rocks have two three-year letter winners returning for their senior season. Outfielder Alexis McClure compiled a fielding percentage of .917 last season, while Caroline Maymon will also play a role in the outfield as well.
“Very versatile player used as a utility player for most of her first three years including as a pitcher,” Revercomb said of McClure. As for Maymon, the coach said that her consistent improvement and aggressive play as an outfielder “will be important to our success.”
Juniors returning for Westfield are first baseman Lexi Martin, catcher/shortstop Savannah Arvin and second baseman/utility Emily Revercomb. Martin was injured in 2018 after a stellar freshman year where she batted .333 with two home runs, 18 runs batted in and six doubles.
“Coming off of an injury in 2018, Lexi will be a leader for us both offensively and defensively,” said Revercomb.
Returning sophomores include pitcher Avery Wagner, outfielder Reghan Oland, catcher/third baseman Sara Harmeyer and shortstop/second baseman Brooklyn Carey. Wagner led the team in the circle last year with 81 innings pitched, 41 strikeouts and a 5.185 earned-run average. Oland was an Honorable Mention in the HCC last year, batting .329 with a .444 on-base percentage, 11 stolen bases and 29 runs scored.
“Each of the last three seasons we have improved our program and our level of play, our expectation for this season will be no different,” said Revercomb. “Our players have worked very hard to improve their skill sets this off season and look for that improvement on the field. I feel one of the biggest and most important improvements we’ve made as a program, is in our relationships and communication with each other. If we have solid relationships and communication throughout the season we will have success regardless of wins and losses.”
Westfield plays its first game Monday at Monrovia.
