Another week, another dramatic win for Westfield.
The Shamrocks opened Hoosier Crossroads Conference play Friday at Zionsville. Westfield made a big comeback from a third-quarter deficit to stun the Eagles 28-27 in a road game.
The ‘Rocks got on the board right away, with Kendall Garnett scoring on a short run just 90 seconds into the game. Brody Boehm made the extra-point kick, and Westfield led 7-0 after one quarter.
Zionsville came back to lead 10-7 in the second quarter, but a long touchdown run by Garnett put the Shamrocks back in front, and another Boehm kick gave Westfield a 14-10 lead. The Eagles scored with 1:19 left in the half, and went into the break ahead 17-14.
In the third quarter, Zionsville surged ahead to a 27-14 lead. The ‘Rocks cut into that lead as Garnett scored his third touchdown of the game, and Boehm kicked the extra point, bringing Westfield within 27-21.
The Shamrocks took the lead for good at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Jackson Gilbert shook off an Eagles lineman and found Garnett in the back of the end zone for a touchdown. Boehm then kicked his fourth extra point of the game. Westfield led by one, and held on to that lead until the final whistle.
“We got off to a good start, forced a turnover,” said Shamrocks coach Jake Gilbert. “We turned the ball over three times and we got a couple takeaways from them, but should’ve had a couple more. We put our defense in bad spots all night, and our defense did just enough to keep us in it, force field goals and do what they had to do to give us a chance to win. Then our offense got hot in the second half, scored some touchdowns.”
Westfield is 3-0 and hosts Noblesville next Friday.
