Dear Editor:
Forget the coronavirus.
Hamilton County faces a much more severe outbreak. It’s the Corrosive Virus of debt.
The county’s nine townships suddenly have accumulated $126.3 million in total outstanding obligations, according to the current Indiana Department of Local Government Finance’s Gateway database, “Debt Management.”
Remain calm, however. The outbreak seems confined to Clay Township, which has the same boundaries as the City of Carmel.
Three township board members have racked up $122 million in debt without taxpayer approval.
So, 96 percent of the virus is contained just in Clay Township.
Quarantined, so to speak.
