Dear Editor:
The extent of Carmel’s public debt keeps growing and growing.
According to the Indiana Department of Local Government and Finance tallies, Carmel taxpayers are on the hook for:
- $1.6 billion in city and redevelopment authority debt;
- $307 million in school debt;
- $104.8 million in township debt; and
- $25.8 million in library debt.
That totals $2.1 billion for a city of 103,093 residents, or nearly $20,000 for every man, woman and child living there.
Fishers, Noblesville, and Westfield are following suit, making Hamilton County the state capital of public obligations.
