Dear Editor:

Congratulations are in order to the new Carmel city administration.

Since the first of the year, the new team has rolled up its collective sleeves, gone to work for the people and racked up real progress.

Most notably, Mayor Sue Finkam’s administration has issued no new debt.

Carmel’s total outstanding debt Jan. 1 was $1.4 billion and it’s $1.4 billion today.

True, a third of a billion dollars in new borrowing has been approved but not issued.

But let’s be thankful for at least a pause if not a reversal of a 28-year-long borrow-and-spend spree.

The new mayor has created a line-and-staff organization that serves the people not the whims of the mayor’s office:

  • A new chief of staff position
  • A new director of marketing and community relations
  • New faces in the legal department
  • An executive director of economic development position
  • New police chief, fire chief, and utilities boss

The list of positive changes can be expanded, but you get the point. Popular government has reared its gorgeous head in Carmel.
