Severe weather preparation begins Sunday

Hamilton County Emergency Management is getting ready for this year’s severe weather preparedness week, March 14 to 20.

The statewide tornado drill will be on Tuesday, March 16, between 10 and 10:30 a.m. To prepare for the statewide tornado drill, Hamilton County Emergency Management resumed weekly testing of the county’s outdoor warning sirens at 11 a.m. on Friday.

The National Weather Service in Indianapolis scheduled the following topics for each day:

  • Sunday: Kick-off – Discuss roles in severe weather
  • Monday: Severe Weather Outlook and Watches
    • Weather outlooks to know what is coming
    • Watches – time to get ready
  • Tuesday: Warnings
    • Taking action when warnings are issued
    • Statewide tornado drill day
  • Wednesday: Response
  • Thursday: Recovery
  • Friday: Weather-Ready Nation
  • Saturday: Wrap-up

Some of the activities Hamilton County Emergency Management is taking to be prepared for severe weather include:

  • Updated the free HCEM app with weather information, live weather radio feed, and preparedness activities.
  • Conducting refreshing training on preparedness, response, and damage assessment for staff and dedicated volunteers.
  • Providing training to municipalities on damage assessment.
  • Testing generators at emergency shelters.
  • Conducting drills in the Emergency Operations Center.
