Sensory friendly day at Conner Prairie next Monday

Families with individuals living with sensory challenges can enjoy Conner Prairie for free while connecting with local organizations that can assist them.

The museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., April 2 for guests with sensory issues, their family members and authorized caregivers. Indoor experiences include Create.Connect, an exhibit that focuses on how science and technology shaped Indiana; Discovery Station and Craft Corner, a free-play area filled with fun play spaces; Makesmith Workshop, an exhibit in which visitors can learn new skills by working with tools and their hands; and the Conner Prairie Store, which is filled with fun games, books, souvenirs, toys and more so guests can take a part of Conner Prairie home with them.

“At Conner Prairie, we teach through experiences and are happy to be able to extend those experiences with the sensibility required in engaging people with sensory challenges,” said museum President and CEO Norman Burns. “That’s why this day is so important for us.”

Several participating organizations will be available throughout the day to meet with families about how their organizations can provide help and assistance. Organizations include ABA-Bierman, Applied Behavior Analysis, Applied Behavior Center for Autism, Behavioral Analysis Center for Autism, Camp Yes-Indiana Institute on Disability and Community, Dynamic Music Therapy, Mini Minds, Nickel Plate Arts, Opportunities for Positive Growth, Paws & Think, Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital, Project Life Saver, Synapse Sitters and Visually Impaired Preschool Services.

Families concerned about crowd size and possible over-stimulation should call 317-776-6000 prior to their arrival and speak to a guest services representative.
