U.S. Senator Todd Young (R-Ind.) on Friday issued the following statement regarding the 20th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks:

It is difficult to believe that 20 years have passed since September 11, 2001. No matter the distance, it remains equally difficult to revisit the images and emotions of that day. The shock, grief, and anger. The Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and the field in Shanksville, Pa.
Though we carried on with our lives over the past two decades, we have never forgotten the terrorists’ attack on our way of life and their taking of thousands of innocent lives. Threats to our national security remain. That life returned to normal after 9/11 is proof how tirelessly we fight them. We must not ever relent.
This is a somber anniversary. We can celebrate, though, that at its worst hour, the world saw America at its best. The first responders charging up staircases and rushing into the burning buildings, the volunteers driving all night and across country to dig through the rubble. The staggering donations of blood, food, and money. The prayers for the lost and the lines around our Armed Forces’ recruiting offices. The flags draped over buildings and waving from highway overpasses. These are among the memories, too.
And of course, so are the patriots who stormed Flight 93’s cockpit to save our Capitol, the politics of those inside it never crossing their mind. Inspired by their sacrifice and heroism, we grieved together, we comforted one another, and we vowed to seek justice with a single voice. In that moment, we remembered that we are Americans above all else.
No matter how many Septembers pass, let us never forget that.
