CARMEL – While it was cold outside Tuesday evening, Fishers’ Allison Scheu provided some heat.

The Tigers senior basketball player made five 3-pointers during Fishers’ girls basketball game with Carmel on Bill Shepherd Court at the Eric Clark Activity Center. The Tigers then clamped down on defense in the fourth quarter to beat the Greyhounds 60-36.

It was Carmel’s Senior Night, and the Greyhounds scored the first two baskets of the game, from Mallory Bourquein and Mackenzie Woods, for a 4-0 lead. Scheu got Fishers on the board with her first triple, and that began a 10-1 run.

Freshman Riley Schellhammer scored five points of that run, including a 3. Scheu made a second 3 in the period, which ended with the Tigers leading 13-9.

“I thought that my teammates found me in really open sports,” said Scheu, a University of Saint Francis commit. “My 3-point percentage isn’t as high as I feel like it reflected tonight, so they were playing off me a little bit in the beginning and I could get in a rhythm.”

“Allison came up huge for us,” said Fishers coach Lauren Votaw. “She’s playing like a senior who wants to keep her season going. She’s working like that every day in practice.”

Scheu hit two more triples early in the second quarter. Woods helped the ‘Hounds keep in it with a 3, then later made two free throws to begin a 6-0 spurt. Bourquein added a layin and a Sydney Bonds basket brought Carmel within 21-20.

Schellhammer stopped the run with a layin, which Bourquein matched with a jumper. Nevaeh Dickman got in the act with a 3 and a jumper, but Maddy Wallace finished the half with her own triple. As a result, Fishers led 28-25 at the break.

A Bourquein layin kept Carmel within 29-27 early, but Fishers took off on a 10-0 spurt. Scheu nailed her fifth 3 of the game to start the run, followed by a 3 by Makayla Triplett. Dickman and Schellhammer each made baskets to push the Tigers ahead 39-27.

The Greyhounds used a 7-0 run to get within 39-34, with Lauren Perry hitting a 3 during the run. But a Schellhammer and-1 was followed by a layin from Natalie Thomas, giving Fishers a 44-34 lead at the end of three.

Thomas and Bourquein traded baskets early in the fourth, after which the Tigers finished the game on a 14-0 run. Schellhammer poured in eight points during that run and finished as the leading scorer with 21 points.

“You don’t ever not want to finish the game hard,” said Scheu. “You want to play all four quarters. We came out a little slow, so we wanted to finish hard and make sure that we sent that message that we were going to play the whole game.”

Scheu finished with 17 points. Dickman scored 11 points, giving Fishers three scorers in double figures.

“What I liked, really about tonight was that it came in all different ways,” said Votaw. “We had Allie, who hit five 3s. Riley had most of hers going to the bucket tonight and Nevaeh was slashing and moving really well without the basketball.”

Bourquein scored 19 points for Carmel, with Woods adding nine points.

“I thought they did an excellent job,” Greyhounds coach Rick Risinger said of Fishers. “They shot a high percentage. I’m assuming they did. It seemed like they hit every shot. But I’m very disappointed in the fact that we didn’t come out and play defense. Regardless of what kind of defense we ran, we just gave them basically uncontested shots.”

The Tigers are 12-7 and host Avon Friday in a Hoosier Crossroads Conference girls-boys doubleheader. Carmel is 9-9 and hosts Pike on Friday.
