Saturday baseball: Carmel goes 2-0 at Bloomington North

The Carmel baseball team won both of its games at the Bloomington North Invitational Saturday.

First, the Greyhounds cruised past Mt. Vernon 9-2. Jay Stein led off the first inning with a left field home run. Anthony Back singled in Evan Vogt, then Tyler Walkey scored on a passed ball and Carmel led 3-0.

The Marauders scored a run in the second inning, but the ‘Hounds added three runs in the third. Parker Heaney led off with a homer, this one to right field. Jackson Harris singled in Carson Mace, then Nate Steele scored when Gabe Mathison was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Back added to the home run parade in the fourth inning with a left field homer. Carmel scored two more runs in the fifth inning: Mathison singled in Stein, then got home on an error.

Mace went 3-for-3, including a double. Back had two hits and Jacob Behm also hit a double. Vogt pitched five innings for the win, striking out six.

The Greyhounds took care of Batesville 8-0 in their second game. Mathison scored in the first inning when Mace hit a sacrifice fly. In the third inning, Mathison hit a double to bring in John Zangrilli, then Mace singled in Stein and Mathison for a 4-0 lead.

Mace wasn’t done, as he hit a solo home run in the fifth inning. Later, Heaney got home on an error, putting Carmel ahead 6-0. In the seventh inning, Stein scored on Heaney’s sacrifice fly, then Mathison got home on an error.

Stein and Mathison both went 3-for-3, while Mace and Harris each had two hits. Cole Caldwell pitched a complete game, with eight strikeouts.

Carmel is 16-7 and plays Wednesday at Cathedral.

Guerin Catholic split a doubleheader with Greenfield-Central Saturday.

The Golden Eagles dropped the first game 14-5. The Cougars scored five runs in the top of the first inning; Guerin Catholic got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Nolan Ratcliff scored on Carson Kail’s sacrifice fly.

Greenfield extended its lead to 9-1 in the third inning. Ben Canada led off the bottom of the third with a home run, then Brody Cain scored in the fourth inning when Ratcliff reached on an error. That cut the Cougars’ lead to 9-3, but they scored twice in the fifth inning to lead 11-3.

The Golden Eagles added two more runs in the seventh inning. Kail singled in Ian Taylor, then Daulton Phillips got home on Frankie Ryan’s sacrifice fly.

Guerin Catholic won the second game 9-2. The Golden Eagles led 3-0 after the first inning: Canada singled in Ratcliff, Taylor got on base with a double, Karson Smith scored on a wild pitch and Luke Gremelspacher batted in Taylor.

Tat Troxell smacked a two-run home run in the third inning, also scoring Jackson Baker. The Golden Eagles put up four runs in the fourth inning. Cain scored on Canada’s RBI fielder’s choice, then Canada scored when Gremelspacher drew a bases-loaded walk. Smith got home on a Troxell walk, and Taylor scored when Finn Holden was walked.

Ratcliff and Smith had two hits, including a double for Ratcliff.

Guerin Catholic is 11-12 and plays Monday at Covenant Christian.
