Royals win exciting dual at Westfield

Westfield hosted Hamilton Southeastern for a Tuesday dual meet, with the Royals sweeping both sides of an exciting meet.
On the girls side, Southeastern won 100.5-85.5. The Royals won four events, including 1-2 finishes in diving (Sarah Ballard and Ashley Sinicropi) and the backstroke (Rebecca Ang and Makana Goss). Ashley Baker won the breaststroke, and the Royals also took the medley relay.
Westfield picked up eight wins: Macy Hoaglan in the 200 and 500 freestyles, Katie Hand in the individual medley and butterfly, Lily Hunter in the 50 free, Erin Verbrugge in the 100 free, and the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
In the boys meet, HSE won 105-81. The Royals won the first 11 events before the Shamrocks took the 400 free relay. Southeastern had four double winners: Evan Sellers in the 200 and 500 freestyles, Marcus Eden in the IM and 100 free, DJ Rogers in the 50 free and breaststroke and Andrew Christopher in the butterfly and backstroke.
Nathan Barr won diving, and the Royals also were first in the medley and 200 free relays. The Shamrocks finished the meet with Noah Brauer, Michael Simpson, Cameron Clayton and Brett Calvin winning the 400 free relay.
Both coaches were happy with their team’s performances.
“I was so pleased with our team tonight,” said HSE coach Andy Pedersen. “On the men’s side, it was just a really solid victory and the guys just did a very nice job. But on the women’s side, my comments almost have to go overboard. I thought our team grew up tonight. We got performances from kids that we haven’t relied upon before, and they stepped up and got it done. Not only that, but the girls swam with so much excitement and energy. It was a fantastic victory for both our women and our men.”
I thought we swam really well,” said Westfield coach Darrick Thomas. “I thought we swam with a lot of heart and a lot of toughness. There were a lot of really good, close races. We came up on the short side of a lot of those, but I think the effort was really great. I thought our attitude and our support of each other was really great.”
