Royals put up good fight, fall to Trojans

The Hamilton Southeastern wrestling team battled with Bishop Chatard until the end on Wednesday, before the Royals fell to the Trojans 34-32 in their Senior Night dual meet.

The meet began at 170 pounds, with senior Zack Wagner getting a major-decision victory. Chatard won the next two matches, by decision at 182 and fall at 195, putting the Trojans ahead 9-4.

Southeastern took the lead back, with Jackson Goodyear getting a 3-2 decision win at 220, then Dom Burgett winning at 285 by fall, keeping him unbeaten for the season. The Royals led 13-9 at that point, but Chatard took the 106-pound match in a back-and-forth bout, and the decision victory kept the Trojans within 13-12.

Aidan Smalley moved up to 113 and got a major-decision victory, then Emily Anderson won 120 by forfeit. Southeastern led 23-12, but Chatard came storming back with falls at 126, 132 and 138. Adam Gerstner got a 7-1 decision win at 145, then Zach Lang pinned his opponent at 152. But the Trojans clinched the meet with a fall at 160.

The Royals are 16-4 for the season and will travel to Brownsburg Saturday for the Hoosier Crossroads Conference championship.
