Thursday’s Hoosier Crossroads Conference boys track and field meet turned into a showdown between Avon and Hamilton Southeastern.
The Royals pushed the top-ranked Orioles all the way to the end before Avon escaped with the conference title, scoring 124 points to sixth-ranked HSE’s 121.5. Seventh-ranked Fishers, which hosted the meet, placed third.
The Royals won three events. Madison Norris got a victory in the 110 hurdles, then joined Chase Maxey, Jack Boyd and Noah Malone for a win in the 4×100 relay. Chris Grubbs was first in the high jump.
Malone finished second in the 100 and 200 dashes, nearly upsetting Avon star Isaac Guerendo in the 200.
“As a team, we made some big strides,” said Southeastern coach John Albrecht. “We have been talking to our guys in the locker room about progress and growth, and we saw it in our field events. We have some of our top athletes coming back off injuries and just in time for state. People are getting their feet under them, their legs are starting to feel good again.”
The Tigers had two victories in distance events. Ethan Meyer paced the 1600 run, while Sam Kuhn was first in the 3200 run.
Westfield scored a win in the 4×800 relay, with Nick Leahy, David Mannella, Jacob Mears and Charlie Miller clocking in at 7:57.0. Payton Haack was first in the pole vault.
Noblesville’s 4×400 relay team of Bryce Gatewood, Mitchell Conard, Sean Kinslow and Devontez Cox finished the meet with a victory in that event.
