Royals fall to Brebeuf Jesuit in overtime

Hamilton Southeastern played some extra basketball for its season-opener Wednesday at Brebeuf Jesuit.
After a double-overtime junior varsity game, the Royals took the Braves to overtime in the varsity contest. Brebeuf took control in the extra period and eventually won 62-57.
The Braves led 12-10 after the first quarter and 30-24 at halftime. Southeastern came back to lead 39-38 after three periods, with Brebeuf tying it up at 48-48 at the end of regulation. The Braves then went on a 12-2 run to start the extra period and held off a Royals comeback.
“It was a tough loss,” said first-year HSE coach John Ashworth. “We had a couple chances there at the end, and obviously you want to use it as a learning experience. Our kids battled and played really tough.”
Senior Sam Jacobs, a three-year varsity player, led the Royals with 22 points. Junior Rephaim Stevenson reached double-double status with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Jacobs collected five rebounds. Sophomore Michael Griffith blocked three shots and Stevenson made two blocks. Both are among several relative newcomers to the varsity Royals, although Stevenson did play a couple of varsity games last year as a sophomore. Deion Miles, a sophomore this season, played some varsity minutes last year as well.
“They’re a good group,” said Ashworth. “They’re hard-working. They’re really coachable. But obviously just inexperienced when it comes to varsity basketball. That will come with time.”
Southeastern plays its first home game on Saturday, hosting Pike.
