July 21, 1936 – July 8, 2018
Ronald Edward “Ron” Perkins, 81, Indianapolis, formerly of Sheridan, passed away on Sunday evening, July 8, 2018 at Wellbrooke of Carmel, surrounded by his family. Born July 21, 1936 in Indianapolis, he was the son of the late Edward and Thelma Bernice (Williams) Perkins.
After graduating from Broad Ripple H.S. with the Class of 1955, he enlisted in the United States Navy. Ron was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Monrovia, serving in the Mediterranean. Following his active service, he chose to reenlist in the Naval Reserves. Ron proudly served his country and the United States Navy for 40 years as a Reservist before retiring from military service in 1996. In 1983, Ron humbly accepted the distinguished honor of being named Reserve Sailor of the Year by the Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Center in Indianapolis.
After some time in the military, Ron continued with his education, earning his Associates Degree in Drafting from Ball State University, and enjoyed a wonderful 26 year career as a draftsman with Citizen’s Gas.
Ron was an avid runner, golfer and bowler. He competed in countless bowling competitions throughout the years, and would never miss an opportunity to reminisce about the perfect game he bowled in 2009. Not one to stay idle, Ron was a very dedicated volunteer. If there was an event that needed a volunteer effort, Ron was always first in line. He was an active member of the Westfield Lions Club, and due to his efforts, he was named both a Melvin Jones Fellow, as well as a W.P. Woods Fellow. Ron was also named the Roy Handley Lion of the Year. Ron was an active member of the Sheridan First United Methodist Church where he enjoyed many years participating in the choir and Methodist Men’s group.
Ron’s family took top billing in his life. Ron is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 51 years, Joan A. (Arthur) Perkins. She and Ron were married on July 15, 1967. Also surviving in his son, Ross E. Perkins (Buffy), Carmel; his sister, Jane Smith of Florida; and by his granddaughter, Nora A. Perkins. There was nothing more important than whatever activity was going on in Nora’s life. Ron loved taking part in everything she was involved in, even if it was just driving her to a lesson or a practice. There was nowhere he would rather be.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother in law, Dave Smith.
A Celebration of Ron’s Life will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 12, 2018 at Kercheval Funeral Home, 306 E. 10th St., Sheridan, with visitation from noon until the time of service. Burial with military honors will follow at Summit Lawn Cemetery in Westfield.
Memorial contributions may be presented to either Lions Club International, or to the United Methodist Men.
